The Role

The purpose of the role and your unique contribution is to deliver high quality legal services in providing advice and assistance to IAG in relation to significant disputes and regulatory matters, champion ethical conduct and practices, build partnerships and work collaboratively in a high performing, customer-focussed team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing and advising on significant disputes and litigation, and on significant regulatory matters involving key regulators including ASIC, APRA, ACCC and SIRA.
  • Build deep and effective relationships with stakeholders to understand their business drivers and strategic priorities.
  • Drive results by:
    • Meeting the objectives of your team and those of your stakeholders.
    • Contributing to and meeting the team’s priorities.
  • Deliver high quality legal services, including strategic and commercially focused legal advice, in a timely manner, to various stakeholders within the business.
  • Effectively instructing and managing external counsel in the conduct of significant litigation and regulatory matters.
  • Advising on remediation programs and associated regulatory engagement.
  • Monitoring legislative/regulatory changes and provision of advice to IAG to proactively identify issues which may impact regulatory compliance, strategy, operational issues, or business processes.
  • Project manage all legal aspects of new projects and initiatives as directed from time to time.
  • Contribute to building and sustaining a highly effective, collaborative LCS team (through, amongst other things, meaningful coaching, feedback, and development opportunities).
  • Contribute to a high-performance culture within IAG Legal and to the execution of the LCS Business Plan (including goals/targets, strategic initiatives, and objectives /key results).
  • Continually contribute to improvement of work systems, processes, and planning systems within your team and across the broader LCS function.
  • Perform your role consistently with your duty to the court and the administration of justice and deliver legal services competently, diligently, and in a timely manner, as set out in the Legal Profession Uniform Law Australian Solicitors’ Conduct Rules 2015.

Skills & Experience

  • Admitted as an Australian legal practitioner with a current practising certificate.
  • Post-admission legal practice experience of at least 3 years
  • Legal practice experience required in the following functional areas gained at a major law firm and / or an in house legal team (including through secondments): commercial disputes and litigation, financial services regulatory, regulatory investigations, general commercial contracts and knowledge of general insurance products, claims and coverage issues.
  • Highly developed legal skills (e.g. written and verbal communications, preparing and delivering legal advice, core litigation skills including preparing and reviewing court documents and undertaking factual and legal investigations and analysis, contract drafting and negotiation, relationship building)
  • Excellent stakeholder and project management skills with the ability to proactively provide strategic and customer centric solutions
  • Ability to triage multiple priorities, influence others and work both autonomously and as a team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Advanced understanding of general insurance and/or the broader financial services industry desirable
