The Criminal Investigator role is aligned with the Australian Government Investigations Standards and criminal law and primarily gathers admissible evidence for a criminal sanction. This role may complete some administrative tasks or refer job to an Administrative Investigator

About the role

In this role you will identify and manage complex and sensitive cases of fraud and criminal offences committed against the agency. The roles work closely together and as part of the leadership group to deliver Business Integrity and agency outcomes. Criminal Senior Investigators are expected to lead complex investigations, operations and projects demonstrating an investigative mindset ensuring an application and understanding of relevant legislation, policies, standards, and governance frameworks. Senior Investigators will undertake various duties associated with investigating and managing cases of suspected fraud and serious non-compliance. These matters are often complex and sensitive in nature. You will also lead junior investigators, and help manage and implement identified priorities. Senior Investigators responsibilities may include leading, managing and supporting team members to deliver quality Fraud and Administrative Investigation outcomes. Senior Investigators are required to understand the strategic and operational imperatives of Business Integrity, be technically proficient, and responsible for the development and training of individuals within the team, meeting team performance outcomes, undertaking and supporting Investigations as required.

Your Duties Will Include

  • Lead and support team members with criminal and/or administrative investigative processes in compliance with criminal or administrative legislation, Fraud Control guidelines, Australian Government Investigation Standards, the department's policies and procedures.
  • Undertake and support investigators in the preparation of plans, analysis of information and evidence, conducting records of interviews, use of search warrants, and preparation of Briefs of Evidence for Commonwealth prosecutions and presentation of evidence in court.
  • Guide, coach and mentor fellow team members where appropriate, and ensure they receive the appropriate training to perform their duties.
  • Lead and or support a team in the fair, equitable, courteous and sensitive treatment of customers within legislative and policy frameworks and to specified standards.
  • Contribute, drive, monitor and report on performance against the team's key performance indicators, business outcomes and respond to management information and national initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain networks and relationships involving internal and external stakeholders, such as the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and the Australian Federal Police and ability to represent the branch with credibility and professionalism.

Key skills/knowledge to undertake the role:

  • Demonstrated experience in the conduct or management of complex operations and investigations, complex customer relationships and highly sensitive cases and issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support a team undertaking multifaceted investigations and to ensure outcomes are based on effective fraud control, response and disruption as well as quality and efficient services to customers.
  • Ability to set direction of work priorities and practices, to achieve business outcomes within established resources and timeframes.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively, negotiating on complex matters, while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Commitment to working in a changing environment with evolving priorities and supporting fellow team members through these changes.
  • Ability to encourage innovation and assist with the implementation of changes to business, policy and practices.
  • Holding a Cert IV in Government (Investigations) or the equivalent, or an ability to obtain this within the 12 Months is ESSENTIAL
  • Possession of, or ability to clear a Baseline clearance check or higher is required
  • Previous experience in investigations within the Government space is highly regarded
